The school year has finally come to an end. It was a good year of teaching. Although, it seems that we all stopped teaching and learning about a month ago (at the conclusion of STAR testing). After that who wants to do a thing except for art projects, portfolios and films. Marcos says that Mexico’s politicians, the media, and even earnest left wing academics are oblivious to the radicalization he sees bubbling just under the surface. He points out that they also had no idea that the reputedly docile indigenous population in Chiapas was on the point of armed revolt 13 years ago. Not that the Zapatista rebellion fitted the traditional mold of macho Latin American armed struggle, or Marcos ever looked or sounded like rebel leaders elsewhere. Even the “sub” in his title - designed to imply an improbable subordination to a council of indigenous commanders - subverted the concept of military discipline employed in most other guerrilla armies.

Happy Cinco de Mayo raza! Who cares if they don’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico. It’s a Chicano invented holiday in the states which makes it important to the raza here. Mexican history is so crazy and twisted. Brigade General Porfirio Diaz was one of the heroes at the battle of Pueblo. It’s too bad he went on the become Don Porfirio Diaz, one of the most hated figures in Mexican history.
Don’t drink too much though because you might miss half the set of Rage Against the Machine at Coachella just like me.
