With all the xenophobic mass hysteria going on it was literally music to my ears as I heard Café Tacuba’s Eo bumping out of the cheap factory speakers of my truck. Was it really a local radio station playing this music? After doing a double check it was indeed true.
The Red Zone, as the show is called, covers the best of latin alternative music. Last night Cha Cha, the very bilingual dj (I love it), played these sweet tracks by Ely Guerra and Julieta Venegas. Ely Guerra’s track was an interpretation of Hasta la Tumba, a song made famous by Los Tigres del Norte. Julieta Venegas sang El Triste, one of Jose Jose’s greatest hits. Both were awesome remakes! After I got home I looked and looked but to no avail. If anyone has those tracks I would very much appreciate it if you could pass them my way.
Unlike many of you who have access to numerous radio stations of all types of genres, I don’t have that privilege. There are many Spanish language radio stations that play mostly norteña, banda and ranchera music but sadly no rock en español.
For the longest time I had my doubts about “New Rock 104.” They did good things like getting rid of Howard Stern in the mornings and replacing that pendejo with KROQ’s Kevin & Bean. For the first time ever I began to listen to morning radio! I grew to like those idiots and then without notice they removed the KROQ morning crew and replaced them with another pendejo, Adam Carolla.
The addition of the Red Zone has made me happy once again with our only alternative radio station. Much love to New Rock 104 for giving me a few hours of auditory pleasure.
I can honestly say that music has had more of an impact in my life than the schooling I received. I know Fresno State is no UCLA or Berkeley, and it’s no knock on the education I received at “State” because I learned so much from the professors in the School of Social Science (Interestingly my favorite professor attended UCLA as an undergrad and finished his doctorate at Berkeley)…but I digress…My outlook has been influenced by the music I listen to. Besides Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine (and many others like the band Maná), another musician that has influenced me immensely is Ricardo Arjona. Just listen to the words of this Guatemalteco and you too will understand. Just the other week I had the honor to listen to Bob Dylan live in concert in Bakersfield. In September Arjona will be be performing at the Gibson Ampitheatre September 8th & 9th.
» Ricardo Arjona - Si el norte fuera el sur
Los Yankees de mojados a Tijuana
Y las balsas de Miami a la Habana, si el Norte fuera el Sur
Seriamos igual o tal vez un poco peor?
» Ricardo Arjona - Mojado
Empaco un par de camisas, un sombrero,
su vocación de aventurero,
6 consejos, 7 fotos, mil recuerdos.
Empaco sus ganas de quedarse,
su condición de transformarse
en el hombre que soñó y no ha logrado.
» Ricardo Arjona - Jesus verbo no sustantivo
Quiza compositor poeta, medio loco o trovador

It’s been one hell of a week in Tigertown. The Tigs are currently undefeated and the offense, well all we have to say is that it’s running on all cylinders (much like the Pistons). The pitching has also been awesome…the rookies (Zumaya, Tata, Verlander) are playing great. I’m impressed. I know, I know, it’s just game 5 of 162 but a fan can still dream right?
